A Little About Us
Our Purpose & Objectives
Jesus’ teachings emphasise this mission clearly: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34-35). He also commands us to love God fully and to love our neighbours as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39).
Inspired by these commandments, the Caritas Movement in Malaysia encourages all Catholics to embody this love in practical ways, living out the call to love their neighbours with compassion and action.
The Catholic Bishops of Malaysia collectively aspire to strengthen the social mission of the Church by enabling every member to be active and caring towards all creation, particularly the poor and the marginalised.
Simply put, the Social Mission of the Church is the expression of how a Christian should be living out a life of holiness as witness through acts of love (Caritas); put another way, Caritas is the expression of God’s love through his people. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:34-35
Thus, is the genesis of the “Caritas Movement” in Malaysia, where all are encouraged and helped to act on the second commandment – ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself. ‘
In alignment with its dedication to the Caritas Movement and the guiding principles of the bishops, the Diocesan Office for Human Development has been officially renamed as Caritas Malacca Johore Diocese (Caritas MJD). This change reflects a renewed commitment to advancing the Church’s social mission within the diocese.
Caritas MJD serves as the principal promoter of the Caritas Movement’s objectives in the diocese. Its primary role is to encourage and facilitate charitable activities among all members of the Church, with a particular emphasis on the following:
